How galvanizing cost is calculated

Hot-dip galvanizing is priced per tonne of steel. The cost has three parts — the zinc the steel actually consumes, the process cost to run it through the line, and the galvanizer's margin:

Galvanizing price / t = (zinc kg/t × zinc price) + process cost + margin

Zinc consumption is the variable that catches people out. It depends on surface area per tonne, so thinner sections pick up far more zinc — roughly 70 kg/t for light gauge down to ~38 kg/t for heavy sections. At a zinc price of $2,900/t that swing alone is worth about $90/t.

Worked example

A typical 3–6 mm structural job at a $2,900/t zinc price and 15% margin:

  1. Zinc consumption ≈ 55 kg/t
  2. Zinc cost = 55 × ($2,900 ÷ 1,000) = $159.5 ≈ $160/t
  3. Process cost (labour, energy, flux) ≈ $300/t
  4. Direct cost = 160 + 300 = $460/t
  5. Margin at 15% ≈ $69/t
  6. Selling price = 460 + 69 ≈ $529/t (≈ $0.53/kg)

How is hot-dip galvanizing cost calculated?

Cost per tonne = zinc cost (zinc consumption per tonne × zinc price) + process cost (labour, energy, flux, consumables) + margin. Zinc consumption depends mainly on steel thickness and surface area.

How much zinc does galvanizing consume per tonne?

Typically 38–70 kg of zinc per tonne of steel. Thinner sections have more surface area per tonne and pick up more zinc; heavy sections pick up less.

Why does thickness change the price so much?

Galvanizing coats surface, but you buy and sell by weight. A tonne of thin steel has far more surface area than a tonne of heavy sections, so it consumes more zinc per tonne — and zinc is the largest variable cost.
